The mandibular condyle is the rounded protuberance that articulates with the mandibular fossa to form the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). The shape of the mandibular condyle may be classified according to five basic shapes viz. flattened, convex, angled, rounded and concave. Previous research indicated that variation in the shape and size of the mandibular condyle, exists and that population-specific differences may also occur. This study aimed to document the shapes and size of the mandibular condyle and determine their relationship with regard to sex, age and race (if any). The morphometric and morphological parameters of the mandibular condyle were measured and assessed in 54 dry mandible specimens (n= 108). The Wedel et al. (1978) classification scheme... |

The TMJ has been to the Dental community a key point in the search of knowledge, being it part of the temporomandibular joint complex and of the estomatognathic system which are in charge of the mastication, speech, swallowing, as well as participation in breathing and taste perception. For the majority of the women in serious state of depression, which do not respond psychotherapeutic treatment, pharmacological treatment it's applied. The antidepressants serotonin selective reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are the most recommended in these cases. The teratogenic effect of the SSRIs is considered controversial, studies done with women who used these drugs during the pregnancy showed that the respiratory and central nervous systems are the most affected, was... |

Among structural alterations that can be a risk factor for temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD) is condylar asymmetry. In order to measure the condylar asymmetry index in panoramic x-rays quantitatively, two methods have been proposed: those of Habets and Kjellberg. The aim of this study was to determine whether the x-ray method of measuring condylar asymmetries in orthopantomographies presents a minor tendency to error due to slight displacements of the head in the horizontal plane. 30 patients between 18 and 25 years of age were assessed. Each of them underwent three panoramic x-rays in three different positions: orthoradial, and at 5 and 10 horizontal angles. Then the Habets and Kjellberg measurements were taken. Habets' technique did not show any... |
